Personal Reminders When Making

AIGA Toledo, BGSUGD (BGSU School of Art, Division of Graphic Design) and the AIGA BGSU Student Group invites you to join us for our continuing BGUSGD Lecture Series, featuring Keetra Dean Dixon: artist, designer and design educator. This lecture is part of BGSUGD Design Week 2011.

Get a peak into the meandering methodologies of Keetra Dean Dixon via excerpts of process and short stories. Dixon will discuss the impetus and techniques utilized while attempting to encapsulate the confusion of connection; touching on attempts to leverage the unexpected in the shaping of experience, breaking as a means of making and twisting materials in the pursuit of new form.

Keetra is a designer and artist working under the handle FromKeetra (fromkeetra.com). Her often frazzled workshop pushes its focus towards non-commissioned work, but occasionally finds the lure of a shiny client job too seductive to resist. Voted most likely to meander, FromKeetra straddles a wide set of mediums in the design of 2D, 3D & experiential projects. Keetra Dean developed many of her core objectives during her masters studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her ceaseless pursuit of wonder and irreverent whimsy previously landed her the role of Art Director with motion graphics studio Brand New School and a position as New Media Lead for the LAB at Rockwell Group. Her work continues to attract media giants such as Nike, The New York Times Magazine, Sony & MTV.

Dixon's work has been recognized on several fronts including a place in the permanent design collection at the SFMOMA, the choice for STEP magazine's Emerging Talent ’09, and the honorable ranking of ADC Young Gun ’08. She has been featured in numerous publications, speaking engagements, and exhibits, including feature articles in Etapes Magazine, works exhibited for the ’09 U.S. Presidential Inauguration, and highlight pieces in several publications by Die-Gestalten. Dixon's first solo exhibit opened it's doors in November 2009 in London's Kessel Kramer Gallery: KKOutlet.

Dixon teaches as a Full Time Faculty member at MICA (Maryland Institute, College of Art).

Understanding Poverty is research by immersion. If you are a designer interested in design for social problems, cultural issues or non-profits, this simulation can trigger ideas for ways you might use “design for good” to solve pressing topics. Join us as we use this hands-on workshop as a research methodology for tackling one of today’s most complex social issues. On October 31, spend your afternoon below the poverty line.

Take a walk in another person’s shoes. Understanding Poverty is about shared experiences and making connections. One day in poverty can lead to a lifetime dedicated to fighting against it. Hosted by the United States Community Action Agency, this simulation gives participants a chance to role-play life as a low-income family dealing with unemployment, disability, financial hardship, and other difficulties associated with life below the poverty line.

During the simulation participants role-play life as a low-income family dealing with unemployment, disability, financial hardship, and other difficulties associated with life below the poverty line. Participants must try to provide food, clothing, shelter and other basic needs for themselves and their “families” during four 15-minute “weeks”. Each family interacts with a mock community composed of volunteers who have experienced poverty and represent various community figures.

Although everyone involved is playing a role with fictional scenarios and props, the Poverty Simulation is not a game. It is instead a recreation outside of life in poverty that gives participants a new perspective on low-income living, as well as giving them a chance to reflect on their experience and discuss what they can do to effect change within their community. The focus is sensitizing people who are not of poverty to the needs and struggles of those within its grasp, with an emphasis on broadening awareness among policy-makers and community leaders.

Design in the Middle
Preserving and celebrating design history in the Kansas City area

For many designers in middle America, “design history” consists of names from distant places, focusing on European beginnings and New York legends. Design in the Middle seeks out and preserves the rarely told stories of prolific designers from the Kansas City area — a Midwestern modern history of design.

Design in the Middle will premiere a new film that chronicles the careers of two original "mad men" of Kansas City advertising, Tim Hamill and Bill Swicegood. Hear about Hamill's days at Bernstein Stein, where he created campaigns on everything from aircraft to rat poison. Learn about the influence of Swicegood commercial art studio and the many local greats that got their start there. Meet Bill, the authentic kissing sailor from the famous 1945 "kissing the war goodbye" photo. Then peruse a growing archive of films and interviews featuring other local design legends such as John Muller, Phil Risbeck, Sonia Greteman, Bill Gardner and Rudolf Wendelin, an original contributor to the classic Smokey Bear campaign.

You can also add to our local design history timeline and genealogy by contributing your own reflections of the people, projects and places that helped shape KC design history as we know it.

Join us and contribute to the history books of Kansas City design. Celebrate the stories that give our creative community context and help us make local design history more accessible, resonant and meaningful.

The Menth Lab Detroit is an anti-smoking project which looks at running a campaign that makes the war against tobacco sustainable and independent of tobacco donors and financial markets. This week long project will bring together the analytical world of business and the intuitive world of creativity and design involving 30 plus design professionals. The project involves graphic design students in high level strategy sessions.

Our objective is to invent MenthLab Detroit, an engine that generates menthol-fighting fashion, games, and music.

AIGA Detroit will be celebrating cars and their design and the need for speed with our event, Greased Up Pinewood Derby. The Derby will feature custom-designed pinewood derby cars created by our guests who can choose to donate them to the auction, or race them on our derby tracks for fame and glory!

AIGA Cleveland invites you to create a holiday ornament that will be auctioned off to benefit the Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity at our fourth annual Art of Ornament. Ornaments will be on display at our annual auction where merry guests will gather December 2nd from 6 to 9pm to bid on your creations. Every penny earned goes toward building a home in our community, and that’s cause for celebration!

This is a call to design, decorate, construct, and use your imagination. The only rule is that your ornament can be hung for display and use.

Some masks are worn by children while they plead for candy on Halloween. Some wear masks to obscure their identity while they party on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. And, others wear masks as they cut the ropes holding up a chandelier in hopes of securing an opera singer’s love and attention.

AIGA SF will celebrate design, mystery and fun with our Fall Gala: Mask Appeal. The Gala will feature custom-designed masks for auction and our guests will be requested to wear a mask, or they can create one on-site.

Not only is the Gala an opportunity for the design community to come together and appreciate our creative spirit, but it is also a special evening for our sponsorship partners. The event typically attracts 700 attendees.

Designing with the ENVIRONMENT in Mind

You’re a creative person, yes? You care about the environment, yes? Well, this event is for you! Today more than ever we must rethink the way we design products, distribute, and do business. It challenges us as designers to take a different look at the world around us. Could there be a better way? This environmentally themed event—with a design twist—promises to be both educational as well as entertaining.

The main part of the night will feature two thought-provoking presentations:

1. The San Diego Zoo’s very own Biomimicry, presented by Dena Emmerson, along with examples of biomimetic applications and an interactive hands on experiment. What is Biomimcry you ask? Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is a new discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell is an example.

2. Sustainable Practices Through the eyes of Lisa M. Cunningham, LEED AP—founder and CEO of Olive Branch Green Building Supplies [an environmentally-friendly store for homeowners and contractors] and a Senior Construction Manager for the Katrina rebuilding effort in New Orleans—who will share her expertise on thinking green and building green.

This FREE event will provide light appetizers and refreshments.

Make sure to arrive early so that you can watch the short, yet creative and very eye opening movie, The Story of Stuff; and then stay until the end for an entertaining Q&A session presented by a special surprise guest.
